What is Swim21?

The ASA’s Swimmer Development Programme for the 21st century. Swim 21 is the ASA’s club development model – a planning tool, enabling clubs to help swimmers, coaches and administrators achieve their full potential. It is centred around the needs of the swimmers – striving to provide them with the best possible environment. It is regarded as the back bone of the ASA’s development programme and the more a club puts into the process, the more it will get out of it. There are four stages:

  1. Teaching Club
  2. Skill Development Club
  3. Competitive Development Club
  4. Performance Club
Each stage is broken down into four categories:
  • Swimmer Development – centred around the needs of the swimmer.
  • Teacher/Coach Development – centred around the needs of the coaches/teachers.
  • Club Management – to ensure the administration of the club is efficient and effective to meet the needs of swimmers.
  • Partnerships – to maximise resources and opportunities to club members by establishing links with other key agencies and by broadening its sporting and local community connections.

What level are RATS accredited?

We are currently accredited with the Silver Award at Teaching Club Level. This means that Romsey and Totton Swimming Club provide quality opportunities to develop basic swimming skills which lay the foundation for future enjoyment. Some of the elements required for this are noted below:-

  • Multi skilled teaching methods.
  • Implementation of ASA’s national Plan for Teaching Swimming or similar structured plan.
  • Utilisation of the ASA Awards Scheme and/or accredited alternative.
  • Qualified ASA Teacher(s), with ASA Assistant Teachers working alongside.
  • Structured links with ASA Skill Development Clubs.

What does Swim21 mean for the Club?

The Club have already benefited from being Swim 21 Accredited in receiving grants from Hampshire County ASA and Southern Counties ASA. We have also benefited from numerous ASA teaching/helpers courses at vastly reduced rates. We are able to use the Sport England Clubmark logo on all correspondence/advertising.

Latest News

The Club have been successful in gaining Swim 21 Accreditation at Skill Development Level. This now complements their Swim 21 Accreditation as a Teaching Club which was granted last year. The Club’s Swim 21 Co-ordinators, Mike Hunter and Di Gosney are delighted to have achieved this second level. Club Chairman, Mike Hunter said that everyone in the Club is delighted to have the quality of our training programme recognised by the sport’s governing body. It particularly rewards the dedication and vision of our Chief Coach, Steve Harrison, and is a fitting tribute to his 20 years of coaching with Romsey and Totton.

Further Information

The Club has all evidence submitted for our accreditation at Teaching Level, and at Skill Development Level kept in two large folders. If you wish to see this evidence, please contact a committee member or officer of the Club. Assistance is required to carry on the Swim 21 programme. Accreditation is for four years, so we need to make sure that we are fulfilling our obligations, and where appropriate, seeking to improve. If you would like to become involved, please let us know (Swim21 co-ordinator is John Kelly johnjo.kelly@ntlworld.com ).
